Being a rich area with plenty of tourism, ‘Sussex by the Sea’’ has plenty of opportunities for signwriters to supply the tourist trade and plenty of opportunities for tourism related businesses to benefit from the number of different display options available. It is especially the case of course where tourist attractions get their display for a new season sorted out early that they can benefit from savings, April and May is when everyone starts to think about the summer and signwriters can pick and choose the highest paying jobs. Mid-November Sussex sign businesses may have a bit more room to negotiate on price although some of the big shopping towns like Eastbourne and Brighton can get plenty of tourists in during the run up to Christmas.
Sussex is really about summer time though with plenty of unique tourist attractions such as Drusillas Zoo Park, the Bluebell steam railway and fantastic beaches including the unspoilt Victorian promenade at Eastbourne with it’s shingle beach and the beautiful long sandy beaches at places like Camber Sands near Rye. In all of these places businesses use signage to advertise their wares and often it is the business that stands out most who will get the customers: especially with businesses such as Ice Cream sellers where there is little else to set them apart.
Brighton is Sussex’s only big city, though Chichester is a lovely smaller cathedral city; along Brighton’s seafront is a huge variety of colour and lights with plenty of shops, restaurants and of course amusements all vying for attention, good clear and eye catching signage can again be what sets a Brighton business apart from the crowd.
Eastbourne is more of a traditional seaside resort and local bylaws prohibit shops on the front, there are plenty of hotels of course all of which use more traditional signage to fit in with the timeless feel Eastbourne has, they are therefore often hand painted and hotels use sign-writers who can give them something that will last and still look great for years: these signs are usually professionally installed by local signwriters as well to make sure that the installation itself will last.
Although Sussex is known most of all for its seaside resorts there are plenty of lovely villages in land as well and towns like Crawley, Hailsham, Burgess Hill and Rye. On the way up to London and Gatwick airport, which is just within Sussex, Crawley, Burgess Hill and other towns close to the M23 have more business to business and technology orientated companies who need a slightly different style of signwriting.
Many of Sussex’s villages and small towns have traditional pubs and local businesses which are popular with locals and tourists alike, the art of pub sign-writing is still alive and well in the county and involves a special kind of skill.
